The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, he said:
“Man.
Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
Sometimes I wonder why do we even chase money. We chase money for 'happiness' in materialistic form. Or security so that you can have the opportunity to live in a better environment, to be able to buy decent food, and to be able to not worry when you're hit with some disease.
I don't think I could live without money, or live in a forest where I could forage and fend for myself, or live like a nun. Personally, I would just be happy with a decent amount of money to not have to worry about being in a shady environment and to get good food. Why do we have to slave ourselves for money? Why do you need to slave away for pride or fame? Will this make you happy?
What will make you happy? How much is your quality of life worth to you? What sort of life do you want to lead? When you're lying on your deathbed, when you look back, do you want to wonder why you slaved yourself over for? Was it for pride or money? And what did that money buy you?
